My mother washed the towels and she said she has a bit of bleach, a cap or less completely with detergent. "This creates chlorine gas? Towels that are still being used?

Yes ... Soap and bleach are good ... Bleach and vinegar are not fair. Beach and baking soda are not good. Every time you flush the load of bleach through a second rinse with a liquid fabric softener in the past.
I mixture of detergent and bleach all the time with my clothes and towels. But do not confuse bleach with other chemicals.
